SHANIWARWADA FORT:- HAUNTING LEGACY OF PUNE FORT.
MYSTERIOUS LEGACY OF PUNE'S PAST
GLORIOUS PAST OF SHANIWARWADA FORT
Symbol of power and prestige- built in 1732 by Peshwa Bajirao 1. Since the foundation stone was laid on Saturday, thereby it named Shaniwarwada. The majestic fort covered the area of 625 acres, experienced countless meetings, diplomatic missions, and royal gatherings. For decades, it witnessed the might of marathas until the day things started falling apart due to inner drift, British attacks left it to become haunting ruins. But these ruins and tragic past alone isnt the reason of shaniwarwada becoming infamous, its the cries of the royal prince that shakes the walls of the majestic fort through his echoes.
THE LEGEND OF NARAYANRAO
Though there are more than one infamous tales around this fort, but the most famous and talked one is the royal prince Narayanrao. Narayanrao became the peshwa after the death of his father. Just 16 years old brave peshwa. According to the tales, his uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai had conspire against him. Some historians believe that Anandibai forged the letter that changed "hold him"(dharaava) into "kill him". (maraa). The moment guards received the letter, they stormed into the chamber of Narayanrao and murdered the young prince mercilessly. Some locals believe that during full moon, the forests around this fort reverberates his last words " Kaka Mala Vachaa! which means uncle save me.
That cold cry earned Shaniwarwada its most infamous title of being one of the most haunted palaces in India.
WHEN THE PAST REFUSES TO DIE
By the day time, Shaniwarwada Fort is a bustling heritage site-guide narrates the tales of royal blood's valor, families visits the massive fort with excitement, but when the sun dips below the horizon, the laughter fades away, crowd disperse, and the only silence remains there- Silence that is heart wrenching, almost watchful.
THE WATCHMAN'S SPINE CHILLING EXPERIENCE
It is said that prince was murdered during full moon's night, so his echoes are clearly audible every full moon. But amongst few there was this watchman who refuse to acknowledge this warning. On one cold night, the watchman was looking at the trees in front of the majestic gates of the fort. Just then he heard soft footsteps running inside the fort's courtyard. Thinking of trespasser, he went inside the fort only to notice the wet footprints on the floor. There was no one to be seen in the fort except for him. he tried to follow them but the footsteps always stayed just out of reach, circling him. The footprints was like as if someone walked barefoot through water. Later on some said he left the job very next morning.
THE FLAME THAT REFUSES TO STOP
In the year 1828, a massive fire consumed Shaniwarwada Fort. People who witnessed this fire claimed that the fire was kept burning for seven days. Unstoppable, unshaken, loud, the flames of fire kept touching the sky growing higher and higher. Even when there was no wood left, the fire wouldn't stop burning. Witness claimed it was the anger, the fury of Narayanrao which was burning down the place that betrayed him.
THE SHADOW ON THE WALLS
Visitors during late evenings have reportedly seen mysterious shadows falling on the walls of the fort. People have seen small, quick, teenage boy's shadow moving quickly along the inner walls. The strangest part is that it doesn't match anyone's shadow or position. According to a tourist's description, it was a boy's shadow was running and walking alongside him then vanished into the walls. When security checked the footage, there was nothing visible during that time.
WHEN LEGACY SPEAKS THROUGH ECHOES
Shaniwarwada remains one of the most iconic symbol of the history that reminds us of both Maratha's triumphs and tragedies. It's haunting legends are not just stories, but reality that speaks of bravery, betrayal, and tragic history that refuses to forget. Every echo that lingers here is not just haunting cry, but a lesson of history that talks to those who dares to listen.
